How do you maintain teak furniture?

Teak furniture is becoming more and more popular in the garden of the middle-class Briton. The more premium product has seen an increase in demand as people have looked to get their garden up together. The extra money that buyers are paying may seem pointless, but the added quality of these products means they can last a lot longer than cheaper forms of outdoor furniture.

The added shelf-life of teak furniture is attractive, however, these statement pieces will only stand the test of time if you make sure they are properly maintained. In today’s blog, we look at some of the ways that you can keep your teak furniture clean and well prepared for years of use in the future.

  1. Use warm soapy water to clean off any moss or dirt

Warm soapy water is one of the best ways to remove dirt and grime from your teak furniture. Try to avoid the use of heavy bleaches or cleaning products as this could stain the teak.

Also when cleaning your furniture make sure you do not scrub too hard. This could damage the timber and cause parts to fray and become damaged. Try to go with small circular motions, without pressing too hard. Equally, we also recommend going with the grain to stop the timber from becoming too worn.

  1. Invest in the right treatment for the teak timber

If you want teak furniture that is going to be easy to clean requiring little time on upkeep, make sure you buy good quality teak furniture. Have a look only and make sure the type of teak timber works well for your climate. Also given the premium cost of the furniture, make sure you have a good understanding of what you are going to be using it for.

  1. Prep the surface before you seal it

The great thing about teak furniture is that if left untreated the timber goes an attractive silvery grey that will work well in many gardens. However, if you do decide to apply a varnish or treatment, make sure you prep the surface beforehand. This will remove any excess dirt and help give your furniture a smooth and luxurious finish. Also, make sure you have a look online to work out which varnish works best for the teak furniture you have bought.

  1. Make sure you clean the furniture as soon as any spills occur

Diligence is essential when it comes to keeping your teak furniture clean and well maintained. Part of this diligence is making sure you clean up any spilt drinks when the accident occurs. This will help to reduce the chances of the teak furniture staining and keep the overall look of the furniture intact.

Find the right teak furniture that weathers well It can often be demoralising when you spend ages cleaning furniture for it to only become faded and damaged over time. To stop this from happening try to buy teak furniture that weathers well throughout the seasons. This helps you get plenty of value out of your furniture for years to come.
